Admission Policy
Grimsby Morris (Men) have never had a written admission policy. In the years following the side's formation the informal policy was in two simple parts.
First, the prospective member had to be reasonably fit (to match the fitness of the side which is hardly Olympic standard these days) and show some promise as a dancer. This is initially judged by the foreman and squire but ultimately judged by the whole side, in an informal manner. We have not excluded anyone on the grounds of 'capability' anytime in the last decade, probably ever.
Second, the prospective member had to be a man or boy. No definition was ever produced and in 1967 it would not have occurred to anyone that it was necessary.
Times have changed however, largely for the better in my opinion as far as gender rights are concerned. Women's rights, gay rights and gender rights generally have all been slowly improving. More specifically the Morris Ring dropped its requirement for men only sides some years ago and women's sides and mixed sides have demonstrated over many years that its not only men that can dance the Morris to a high standard. Given that our numbers have also been in decline in recent years we decided to bite the bullet. In November 2021 Grimsby Morris Men voted to officially remove the word 'Men' from our name and to remove the second restriction on membership of Grimsby Morris.
As yet there is still no separate written admission policy, although membership is covered in a little detail in the constitution.
